Memories, historical pics, stories: a new book celebrates the 80th edition of the U23 International Classic that launched many cycling stars over the years
The Giro del Belvedere, to be held on Monday April 2nd in Villa di Cordignano (Treviso, Northern Italy), assesses its stories and memories, facts and figures through a new book, “Ultima curva a sinistra – 80 edizioni del Giro del Belvedere”. (Last bend to the right – 80 years of Giro del Belvedere) written by Valentina Covre, a 33-year-old girl living in Cordignano, to reaffirm the atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm in Villa di Cordignano in looking forward the “D-day” of its Easter Monday Classics.
The book – to be unveiled in occasion of 2018 Giro del Belvedere’s official vernissage, scheduled on Friday March 23rd in Treviso’s nearby – retraces the history of the Italian cycling event with all the route’s changes and the backstories unveiled by the organizing committee, the achievement of the international status and the turning point in terms of marketing and communication. Moreover, the second part of the book collects evidence of athletes, sports directors, organizers through a number of engaging stories and funny anecdotes.
Enhanced by unpublished photos, the two halves of the book are interspersed by the roll of honor: from the first edition won by Italian Alfonso Piccin on October 14th, 1923, to Belarus Aleksandr Riabushenko, the last year’s winner dressing the European Champion jersey, throughout other outstanding top buns such as Maurizio Fondriest, Silvio Martinello and Ivan Gotti.
“We were wondering about the opportunity to realize a book on our history since long time – the OC director Gianfranco Carlet explained – After months of work, we finally complete our tribute to those who contributed to the growth of the race. This book is not just a collection of names or dates, but a mix of stories and anecdotes remembering the exploits of the cycling stars in our event“.
